our workshops

Values in Action runs SRV and SRV-related events for people who are searching for ideals, values and practical strategies to guide them in their roles in relation to people who are at risk at being devalued, perhaps through disability, ageing, mental illness or homelessness.

The presenters are Accredited Trainers in Social Role Valorisation theory and recognised world-wide.

Participants at events generally include:
  • people employed in, or on the management committees of, human services that support people who are marginalised
  • friends, families and advocates
  • people with disabilities.

SRV EVENTS

Values in Action offers the following SRV Theory Events:

Towards a better life
  • A 2-day introduction to the Social Role Valorisation framework and the possibilities it creates.

SRV10 – a leadership event
  • an expanded and in depth SRV leadership event

Both events involve a lecture format with some reflective group work or class discussion. They incorporate a detailed examination of SRV Theory, illustrated by real-life examples that include the presentation of a DVD or a guest speaker.

SRV Theory events are intended to assist participants to:
  • strengthen, support and confirm their commitment to individuals who are wounded by devaluation
  • gain a deeper understanding of devaluation and its consequences
  • learn the basic principles of Social Role Valorisation (SRV) as a means of addressing those experiences of devaluation
  • become clearer about their personal values in relation to devaluation and  personal response to people who are devalued.

PASSING

PASSING is designed for people have completed a Social Role Valorisation Theory Event offered by an approved training group and wish to further deepen their understanding of SRV and its application.

PASSING is an intensive 5-day live-in workshop. Participants visit two human services and spend time with the people they support. Participants also spend time with the staff and managers of those services. They then use the PASSING evaluation tool to evaluate, from the point of view of the ‘client’, each services they have visited.

Services visited can be aged care facilities, special schools, day programs, business services and supported accommodation services.

The PASSING workshop is demanding and complex. Participants should plan to forego all outside involvements during the workshop days and nights.

Participants should only attend if they have a real desire to better understand the complex ideas behind SRV so as to apply this to real life situations. A willingness to learn through a rigorous process is highly beneficial for application that will truly assist people get better lives.

Values in Action is extremely grateful to the services that volunteer their agencies for the training of PASSING participants (please note that the PASSING workshop does not equip participants to be service evaluators).

PASSING MASTERCLASS

This event is designed for those people who have done PASSING before and are interested in deepening their knowledge of SRV and skill with the PASSING tool to better understand the helpful and unhelpful characteristics of human service design.

It includes a formal briefing, a study visit to one human service, interviews and conversations with both the people who receive the service and those who provide the service, conciliation of ratings and an analysis using the PASSING tool.

Of benefit to participants are the three characteristics of the event that makes it a Masterclass. Participants:
  • visit a site with a level of complexity due to the complex needs of the service recipients or a complex CVA (culturally valued analogue) or complexity in one or more of the SRV principles
  • work with a very experienced team leader
  • work with other experienced team members, all of whom have done PASSING at least once.

SRV-RELATED EVENTS

From time to time and depending on demand Values in Action conducts several SRV-related events including:

SRV Perspectives Half Day Events

Social Role Valorisation (SRV) is a rich and thought provoking theory that is helpful in many ways. These include the design and analysis of support arrangements, and shining a critical light on a range of issues. This series uses SRV as the lens to examine three issues:
I) PERSON CENTRED APPROACHES
II) THE NDIS
III) HUMAN SERVICE MODELS

It would be beneficial to have attended an SRV workshop or read about SRV (pre-readings will be available).

Taking the lead in service design

Knowledge of SRV and PASSING is most often applied to services that already exist. This workshop however starts at design!

It provides an overview of the thinking behind the design of any set of support arrangements to ensure that they are coherent with the needs of service recipients. This is an illuminating contrast to how services are typically designed, such as through good intention, or with an overemphasis on adherence to funding or legal requirements.

‘Taking the Lead in Service Design' provides opportunities to analyse an existing service arrangement and design an alternative, more relevant and potent one. It is a mixture of lecture, discussion and practical application. The workshop is one that builds on your understanding of the Social Role Valorisation framework by exploring the concept of Model Coherency. The elements of Model Coherency are fundamental building blocks for service development, delivery and review.
